While dentures are certainly time-tested, they don’t (and can’t) last forever. These tooth replacements – as durable as they are – must be switched out for new ones every few years. With that said, you might wonder: How will you know when to replace your dentures? There’s no need to worry or fret; your Nepean dentist can address this issue. To get the answers you want, keep reading and learn four key signs you should switch out your dentures.

They’ve Broken or Fractured

Once your dentures suffer breaks or fractures, you should replace them. Continuing to use them would be risky for you and your smile.

Indeed, broken dentures actually count as a dental emergency. Their breaks and fractures have sharp edges – the kind that can injure your teeth, gums, and other mouth tissues. Adding insult to injury, using them will also cause the devices’ fit to break down. It’s better to avoid such problems by getting your dentures repaired or replaced.

They Don’t Let You Eat & Speak Well

If a denture doesn’t help you eat and speak, you’re better off replacing it. The device isn’t doing much (if anything) to improve your oral health or quality of life.

When a denture makes eating and speaking hard, it often has a poor fit. The prosthetic doesn’t adhere well to your mouth, so it can’t apply force to help you chew your food. Your tongue also can’t rely on a denture’s teeth in that scenario, meaning you’ll struggle with words. It follows that you should switch out your old dentures for new ones.

They Have a Very Loose Fit

Dentures that feel loose or “off in your mouth are ones that don’t work. As such, you should replace them with new ones as soon as possible.

Remember, good dentures remain firm and secure with friction alone. You won’t need adhesives or other tools to stop them from slipping, even when you’re chewing or speaking. Once a denture feels loose, it’s at a point where it needs adjustment or replacement. Adhesives, creams, and similar items would only serve as short-term fixes.

They Cause Aches & Pains

It’s normal for dentures to cause aches when you first get them. However, those that prompt persistent pain must often be replaced.

You see, quality dentures apply even pressure throughout your gums. This trait allows the prosthetics to help you eat, speak, and smile relatively easily. When a denture puts more pressure on specific points, something has usually gone wrong with its design. To avoid painful pressure sores, you’ll want to replace it with a better restoration.
