A Secure Hold for Your Beautiful Teeth

Many people who restore their lost teeth with traditional dentures find that their appliances leave a lot to be desired. While modern dentures are amazingly comfortable and lifelike, they require elaborate nightly cleaning rituals, do not address the underlying issue of jawbone atrophy, and must be replaced after several years. Securing your dentures with dental implants can allow you to exert maximum chewing power and give you restorations that can last for a lifetime if they receive proper care. Here’s a brief guide to how implant dentures work and who can benefit from them, but please contact the team at our Nepean office if you have any questions.

What Are Implant Dentures?

Dental implants are titanium posts surgically inserted into the jawbone and fused with its structure through the natural process of osseointegration. This allows them to support lifelike dental restorations that can exert superior chewing power and last for decades if they receive excellent care. Many people use dental implants to anchor their dentures in their mouths, resulting in functional and long-lasting restorations that work exactly like natural teeth.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures should only be able to be removed by a qualified dentist, and they use four to six strategically positioned dental implants to secure a full restoration to the jawbone. These implant dentures function the most like real teeth, but successfully placing them requires more jawbone density.

Removable Implant Dentures

Also called “snap-on dentures,” these devices use bar- or ball-retained clips to connect a lifelike dental restoration to the patient’s implant posts. This requires two to five implants and allows the device to be removed for daily cleaning.

The Implant Denture Process

The team at Fisher Dental is trained and equipped to safely perform the dental implant placement surgery in our office. During your consultation, Dr. Bal will carefully evaluate your oral health, medical history, and list of medications to make sure you can be a good candidate for implants. Once you are cleared for the treatment, we will painlessly place your implants and schedule you for at least two more appointments several months later. Then, we will attach your abutment pieces and anchor your dentures in place, giving you a complete, strong, and beautiful smile.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

To qualify for implants, you’ll need to be free of oral infections like gum disease and tooth decay and have sufficient bone mass in your jaw. If you’re not ready for implants yet, we may be able to schedule you for periodontal treatment or refer you to a specialist for bone grafts if necessary. You’ll also need to be healthy enough for minor surgery, and health issues like pregnancy, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, and hemophilia can complicate the process. However, these do not necessarily preclude you from implants, so please let us know if you have any conditions like these during your consultation so we can plan your treatment accordingly.

Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants

While implant dentures take more time and cost more money than traditional restorations, they can deliver a number of amazing benefits such as:

  • Superior chewing force that allows you to eat anything you like.
  • Restoring exercise to the jawbone, which can prevent the face from taking on a sunken appearance.
  • Not sliding around in the mouth, which can prevent gum irritation, dental damage, and slurred speech.

Potentially lasting for a lifetime if they receive excellent care, making them an excellent investment in your oral health.
